Rittenhouse Cast Iron Walking Sprinkler Review
As i have a large lawn i decided to take a look at the range of lawn sprinklers available. Previously I always had to leave my stationery sprinklers on, then turn them off in order to reposition them to another part of my garden before turning them back on again. I would have to do this a few times before my entire garden was saturated. So when I came across the Rittenhouse Cast Iron Walking Sprinkler i took immediate interest as this was a problem solver.
I carried out extensive research into the product before making up my mind to buy! Here is what i found:
What Is The Rittenhouse Cast Iron Walking Sprinkler?
It’s a heavy duty, quality made, all American traveling sprinkler. You attach the hose (5/8″) and lay it out on the route you need the sprinkler to follow. It will indeed then follow the course of the hose at a pace you set!
Things To Consider When Looking For A Traveling Sprinkler
- The quality of the product.
- How much hose can it pull?
- Water coverage.
I will now explain each of the above points in relation to the Rittenhouse Cast Iron Walking Sprinkler!
The quality of the product
While I was carrying out my research into walking sprinklers it was pretty clear from an early stage that not all walking sprinklers were created equal! The most obvious places you can tell this immediately is in the materials. The vast majority of walking sprinklers such as the Nelson 1865 Raintrain Traveling Sprinkler, which by the way is a top seller is made with plastic, including the gears. According to many of the reviews, this is a great problem. Put simply, they break!
The Rittenhouse Cast Iron Walking Sprinkler is made 100% from cast iron! It weighs 30lbs as opposed to it’s rivals 18! This baby is built to last! Sure it’s about three times as expensive but I did come across some reviews that stated that they had their Rittenhouse passed down to them and it had still been working after 60 years. With the Nelson, some people were having to buy brand new models every summer.
How much hose can it pull?
Clearly this may not matter to you depending on the size of your lawn or garden. Due to the sheer weight of the Rittenhouse Walking Sprinkler, it’s able to pull up to 300 feet of hose with no problems or detriment in performance. The Nelson on the other hand with its lighter weight can only pull a maximum of 200 feet of hose and this would severely effect performance especially if it was running up a gradient.
Don’t forget that walking sprinklers use the hose as a track and they’re unable to do right angled turns, so try and use gradual turns where possible.
Water Coverage
The Rittenhouse sprinkler doesn’t need to be traveling to be working! It can of course remain stationery and still carry out a remarkable job of watering due to its sheer force. The Rittenhouse can reach a radius of anywhere between 4 to 50 feet which guarantees total coverage when it’s traveling along the hose.
How Much Should You Expect To Pay?
I have found the Rittenhouse Cast Iron Walking Sprinkler available on many online retail sites for around $199 however you shouldn’t really have to pay that much for it. The cheapest place I’ve found the Rittenhouse available for is on Amazon!
What’s Included?
Everything needed to operate the sprinkler is included, however you will need to own a 5/8″ hose separately!
What Others Are Saying?
- This tractor works great. I have about 200 feet on an uphill angle and it walks right up.
- Buy 2, I did, one for the front and one for the back yard. They are THAT good.
- This is a solid, durable, bomb proof sprinkler.
- This was the perfect sprinkler, well worth the additional money compared to the traveling sprinklers available in local stores.
- Not a bit of plastic on this thing, no cheap gears to strip when dragging a lot of hose behind it.
- The water distribution seems very good and even.
- Every review on this sprinkler was a five star and rightly so. Reviews on the competitors were all over the map.
Any Complaints?
A few people have mentioned it’s a shame it doesn’t have an automatic shut off system like some other models have! This means you’ll need to keep more of an eye on it than other models, you certainly can’t leave it on over night! One solution to this could be to buy a watering timer so you can have it turn itself off whenever you need it to!
